The Business Development and Tourism Department has two primary missions:

  • Recruting new businesses to the county
  • Supporting the tourism industry that has proven to be an economic engine for multiple Sandoval County communities.

The department also sustains itself with revenue generated from managing an events center and a small-business incubator.

The department operates from offices in the historic El Zocálo complex on Camino del Pueblo in the heart of Bernalillo. Like the department it houses, the El Zocálo complex serves many purposes.

Each year, more than 10,000 people pass through the Sandoval County Visitor's Center located in this complex, seeking information about interesting places to visit in Sandoval County and other parts of New Mexico.

A second building in the El Zocálo complex houses a small-business incubator. Several companies that started in this center have outgrown their spaces and moved to other locations, making room for new startups.

The Business Development and Tourism Department also manages the Sandoval County Fairgrounds in Cuba. That facility, in addition to hosting the annual County Fair, has its own events center that can host functions throughout the year.
