Public meetings on new solid waste facility and road construction this Wednesday

Two public meetings related to county infrastructure projects are scheduled for this Wednesday, May 24, 2017.

The Sandoval County Public Works Department is holding a meeting to inform the public about its permit for a new regional solid waste center. The meeting will include a presentation on the county’s plans and timeline for moving from the current solid waste facility into a new center. Members of the public will be able to ask questions following the presentation.

This meeting is scheduled for 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the commission chambers of the Sandoval County Administration Building, 1500 Idalia Road, Building D, in Bernalillo.

Sandoval County has submitted an Application for Permit to the New Mexico Environment Department for a solid waste facility that will be owned and operated by the county. This facility would replace the current county landfill, but it would not become operational for a least ten years from now. The 500- acre site for the new facility is located at 4600 Encino Road, NW in Sandoval County.  Full details about the county’s application for the facility will be available at Wednesday’s meeting, which also will be streamed live on the county’s website.

Also on Wednesday, the New Mexico Department of Transportation is hosting a meeting to discuss the reconstruction of US Highway 550 from New Mexico Highway 313 to New Mexico Highway 528. That meeting is scheduled from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Black Box Theater at Bernalillo High School,  250 Isidro Sanchez Cir, Bernalillo, NM

Elements of this project include:

  • Building an “off-line bridge” to the north of the existing bridge to carry westbound traffic across the River on US 550
  • Expanding US 550 to include three traffic lanes, and bicycle lane and sidewalks in both eastbound and westbound directions.
More info on the project, and the public meeting, can be found here.
